A Helping Hand Digest #61

AGROPROJECT

The first phase of our agro-project — the distribution of seeds to internally displaced persons and affected communities — is nearing completion. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of our team and volunteers, the distribution was completed last week in most of the targeted settlements.

The support primarily covered frontline territories. People received vegetable and herb seeds to enable them to grow their own food this season.

Project coverage by settlements:

  • Pavlohrad — 420 families
  • Kamyanske — 470 families
  • Sofiivka — 370 families
  • Novokhatske — 110 families
  • Lozova — 70 families
  • Zlatopil — 60 families
  • Balakliia — 100 families
  • Izium — 100 families
  • Khotomlia — 300 families
  • Beryslav and Beryslav district — 1,200 families

In total, another 3,200 families received the necessary seeds for planting. This not only provides access to fresh produce but also helps people feel a sense of control over their lives in difficult circumstances.

We thank our donors for their trust and support. Together, we are creating conditions for stability, self-sufficiency, and a dignified life even in times of crisis.

“I am an internally displaced person, having arrived from the city of Donetsk. I am a pensioner and a person who has lost everything earned throughout my life; I have nowhere to return to. Our home was destroyed by the Russians — not a trace of it remains. We currently live in rented accommodation in the city of Verkhnivtseve. I s

Support for affected communities in Donetsk region: aid and evacuation

The teams of the “Step with Hope” foundation have repeatedly delivered humanitarian aid to the settlements of Tolstoy, Novokhatske, Piddubne, Myrne, and Komar in Donetsk region. Throughout this time, our reliable partner in the region has been a representative of the local administration, with whom we have collaborated since 2023. Thanks to her involvement, we were able to provide targeted assistance to the most vulnerable families — based on pre-prepared lists.

However, due to the worsening security situation and intensified shelling in these communities, a mass evacuation of residents began. The foundation’s team also joined this process, helping people leave dangerous areas.

We also took care of evacuating our partner from the administration and her family. We managed to find them safe housing in the city of Synelnykove, Dnipropetrovsk region. Currently, the administration where she worked is temporarily relocated to Pidhorodne. She visits the office weekly and continues her work.

Recently, we received updated lists from her of internally displaced persons from these districts who are now living in the villages of Pokrovske and Vasylkivka. Thanks to this, we were able to deliver seeds for spring planting as part of our agro-project. This allows families who lost their homes to have access to their own food and partially restore a sense of stability.

Dobropillia — Seed Distribution

Seeing that people are finishing the process of planting their seeds, we have prepared for the second phase of our assistance — the distribution of seedlings. Today, the first truck carrying seedlings departed for Beryslav district, delivering seedlings for over a thousand families.

Daily support in Kherson: working under constant danger

The “Step with Hope” foundation team in Kherson continues to provide vital assistance to the city’s residents, especially those living in so-called red zones.

Last week, we managed to accomplish several important tasks:

  • Delivered bread to four families living in dangerous areas without access to stores;
  • Refueled six generators that have been providing minimal living conditions in homes without electricity for over six months;
  • Conducted disinsection in two large facilities where critical need arose with the onset of warmer weather;
  • Performed deratization in four locations, including a basement and a bomb shelter;
  • Repaired a diesel heater that provides warmth to people in difficult conditions;
  • Delivered food aid (dry breakfasts) to a large family previously evacuated from the Komyshany settlement;
  • Provided food for two abandoned animals left without care.

Our team works under difficult conditions, daily facing the consequences of shelling and drone attacks. We regularly support people with limited mobility with medicines and food, help address sanitary challenges caused by the war, and do not neglect even the smallest—abandoned animals who also need care.

We thank our donors for their support, which enables us to be close every day to those who need it most.

Donetsk Region: Providing Aid Despite the Danger

From May 2 to 4, the Step with Hope foundation team made another trip to Donetsk region — visiting Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, and Dobropillia. These areas remain under constant threat of shelling, and the situation in the region is rapidly worsening.

The road between Dobropillia and Bilokurakyne has become especially dangerous — civilian vehicles on this route have repeatedly been targeted by drones. Despite the risks, locals continue to attend our meetings. Among them is a woman who travels this route every Saturday to participate in volunteer activities. She not only receives aid but also helps distribute humanitarian cargo and glasses.

During the visit, we also went to the local hospital. There, a woman is recovering who survived a nighttime shelling of her village — Nova Ekonomichna. On the night of May 1, her home was completely destroyed. She woke up feeling sharp pain: fragments hit her abdomen, back, and left side. Despite her injuries, the first thing she did was try to dig her husband out from under the rubble. Neighbors stopped her, realizing that saving him was no longer possible.

The military transported the woman to the hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. She lost not only her loved one but also her home. All we could do was be there with her, listen to her story, hold her hand, and offer words of support.

While we were there, another local resident entered the ward. He also lost everything: the only thing left is his car, into which he packed all his belongings. His village, like many others in the region, has been wiped off the map.

We continue to support the people of Donetsk, stand by them in their hardest moments, and not leave them alone with their tragedy. Your help gives them the chance to feel that they are not forgotten.

KONSTANTYNIVKA, DRUZHKIVKA

Druzhkivka. On Friday evening, the city came under attack. As the front line approached, KAB missiles began to hit the city — something that had not happened before.

Kharkiv Region: Care Close By

Znamianka

My name is Tetiana Vegera. I live with my husband, who is visually impaired and classified as a Group 1 disabled person. We survive solely on his pension. Every Wednesday, we receive bread from the foundation. We sincerely thank you for your help — it is a great support for us. We truly hope that this war will end soon.

Chuhuiv and Kochetok Urban-Type Settlement

“I am Maria Serhiivna, born in 1947, a pensioner from the city of Chuhuiv. In these difficult times, I sincerely thank you for your help and care. Thanks to you, we do not feel abandoned.”

Kharkiv, Kamyana Yaruga, Mala Danylivka

Over the past two weeks, the situation in the region has remained tense. The city and surrounding areas have been subjected to shelling, with impacts recorded on multi-story buildings and private homes. Despite the dangers, our team continues its work.

Approximately 18 meetings were held with children and teenagers, discussing important topics, including “How to Use Your Words Properly.” After the meetings, there was a warm tea session with popcorn.

On Friday, a joint meeting for children and teenagers took place, and on Saturday — a charity lunch for local residents and distribution of bread.

In the evening, a screening of the cartoon “Boni the Bee” was organized for children, followed by an evening of board games for teenagers.

Meetings for people with disabilities have resumed.

Food and hygiene aid was provided to those in need.

One of our volunteers shared her personal story with us:

“Until recently, I never really thought about health or how long life might last. But two months ago, during a routine check-up, I was diagnosed with cancer.

It was a shock. Accepting this reality is difficult, but I try to fight it every day.

Because of persistent headaches, doctors referred me for an MRI of the brain. One of the most accurate machines is located in Kharkiv, so I had to travel there.

Thanks to the support from the ‘Step with Hope’ foundation, this trip became possible — they helped me financially with the travel and examination costs.

I sincerely thank everyone who helps people like me. I continue to fight.

I believe that God will give me either the strength to recover or the strength to walk this path to the very end.”

Irina K. Astaforova, 88 years old.

“I am always grateful for the bread delivered by the charitable foundation Step with Hope. Many thanks to everyone involved in making this possible”
